At their March 26, 2026 meeting, the Ottawa Valley Waste Management Board approved a resolution directing staff to discontinue the acceptance of asbestos waste at the landfill effective May 15, 2026.
This decision is based on the Centre’s limited remaining landfill capacity, with a current estimated lifespan of just over a year. The Centre is actively working to obtain approvals for the Phase 2 landfill expansion, which is expected to provide approximately 13 years of additional capacity.
Asbestos is particularly challenging to manage as it occupies significant landfill space. It cannot be compacted due to the risk of releasing fibres and must be covered with substantial amounts of material (gravel), further reducing available capacity.
The Board will reconsider this decision once approvals for the Phase 2 expansion are received.
