Battery Recovery Program

Why Recylce Batteries?

When household batteries enter the landfill, their protective casings can be damaged. As a result, hazardous heavy metals can leak out and harm fragile ecosystems. While household batteries make up what would seem to be an insignificant 1% of the total trash in municipal landfills, they are responsible for a staggering 50% to 70% of all hazardous heavy metals found in landfills!

The Government of Ontario recently labeled all batteries “Special Waste”. This means that once batteries have lived out their useful lives they should be brought to the Hazardous or Special Waste (HSW) Depot or an HSW mobile event to ensure safe disposal.

What Should I Do With My Batteries?

When your batteries are no longer functional you can store old batteries in a container until it is convenient for you to dispose of them safely.

In order to facilitate the safe disposal of batteries the Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre has set up a Battery Recovery Program. Central drop-off bins for old household batteries can be found in various municipal facilities including offices and libraries.

You can also drop off you batteries atthe Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre's Hazardous Waste Depot during our regular operating hours, free of charge.
